Oh this!
I learned to speak Chinese with a Dongbei accent because I used to live not far from the OP (which definitely gets me weird looks as a white lady originally from Kansas.) Native Mandarin speakers are often SO confused by my accent. But yes…Taiwanese speakers do sound really melodic and beautiful. And I sound like I’m angry shouting all the time.
In Germany and Austria, the Swiss are well-known for speaking Scweizerdeutsch. For reasons unknown, they use diminutive forms of a ton of nouns. The result is that Swiss people speaking German sound like if you found a city in Appalachia where it was 100% normal to baby-talk to everyone, all the time.
On the flip side, no one can understand a goddamn thing coming out of a Viennese person’s mouth.
The dialect variance within the German language is insane at times
This is not exactly a new thing tho - here have a video from 1973 about it:

Regarding Xicheng fics. Yaaaaay! COME AND JOIN ME :D
My journey into Xicheng was basically: Why would anyone ship these two?? I don’t get it???????
Then I read this Wangxian fic:
a life without sun by thankgodforpandas
A great calamity fell upon Qishan Wen. It’s said that some of the Wens still live, surviving on turnips and raw hope, but Jiang Cheng has not thought of Qishan Wen in years. He has enough on his mind with securing a lecture for Yunmeng Jiang, and somehow, dealing with Wei Wuxian’s nauseating affection for Lan Wangji.

This isn’t that long comparatively, only (hah!) 30k, and xicheng are friends in it, no romantic attachment, but for the first time I saw the potential. OHHHHHH. I said to myself. I like this friendship. This could really be something more. Maybe I’ll try and find some Xicheng fic. AND SO IT BEGAN.
The Beginners Guide to Moving On by Messenger18 (189k)
Jiang Cheng is jaded, bitter and miserable. Lan Xichen isn’t sure he can ever trust anyone again. They’ve always been at the periphery of each other’s lives, perpetually visible but never touching, and it seems it’s going to stay that way. Then Jin Ling and Lan Sizhui fall in love, and everything changes.
Thrown together as the only single men in a family full of couples, neither is exactly happy about their situation. But when two lonely people find each other, sometimes they can be a little less lonely together.
Written because both Jiang Cheng and Lan Xichen deserved better, and their characters go so well together. Also I needed something to get back into writing.

I started this fic on a whim one afternoon. I stayed up until 3am to finish reading it, and then had to peel my eyelids apart at 7am to get my kids to school. I have NO REGRETS. Soft. Gentle. Post canon healing fic. Side wangxian. Beautifully developed relationship. I particularly enjoyed the set up.
This line: “Over time, Jiang Cheng learned to convince himself that he disliked the touch of other people. If only because he received it so little that it was better to believe he’d never wanted it in the first place.” FUCKING DESTROYED ME.

From there I decided to read:
Upon Our Silver Bridge by TheWanderingHeart (422k)
“When the path ignites a soul, there’s no remaining in place. The foot touches ground, but not for long.”
― Hakim Sanai

Lan Xichen’s sorrows have caught the attention of something. Unlike the adventures and foes they have faced before, there is no obvious enemy here to defeat. If this is the same thing they thought had taken Nie MingJue’s life, then he believes it is fated for him to die as well. Nothing can stop the black fire when it wants to burn.
Jiang Cheng is sure his part in this is over. Wei Wuxian is back, his grand adventure concluded, and he’d never been at the centre of it anyway. So what does it matter what happens to him in the end?
Slowly, he will come to realise that there will always be a battle to fight, a story to tell, a choice to make, and there is no such thing as an end to anything.

I am still reading this fic. I haven’t finished it, but I’m still gonna rec it. It is 422k and it is a WIP that has only one chapter left to be published. I almost never read WIPS. I HAVE NO REGRETS. Such amazing characterization. There’s this moment early on between Jin Ling and Jiang Cheng, a conversation that was so beautifully rendered, really showed the depth of their relationship. The slow build between Lan Xichen and Jiang Cheng is simmering nicely. Some lovely Wangxian moments too, so far!

High Hopes (But The World Keeps Spinning Round) by Messenger18
Also known as: Baby Jiang Cheng’s attempts to deal with his isolation from his family, and what that entails.
Also known as: At nine, Lan Xichen finds out what it means to be an older brother.

This one I’m including because of it’s insights into Lan Xichen’s character particularly. It really made me think about him in ways I hadn’t really considered before :D
I hope you enjoy these as much as I have!
